Potty Training a 5 Month Old Baby

This is my 5 1/2 month old youngest granddaughter, Keira. She really does go #2 on the potty! And she hasn’t even mastered the skill of sitting up by herself yet! Her mother, my own youngest daughter, is a stay at home mom, and Keira lets her know when she needs to go with both verbal and physical cues, usually after a meal. My daughter told me about this, but I didn’t quite believe it, until I saw the beginning (Keira being changed on the changing table), the middle (what you’re seeing) and the end (I spared you the ‘end result’ in the bowl on this) Keira’s head bonk on the plastic lid of the toilet at the end didn’t hurt her at all. The lid is soft plastic. And my daughter treats all little bonks and bumps with a quick hug, a bouncy or 2 and Keira just rolls it all off. Keira uses a ‘Bumbo’ potty seat that fits on the toilet. Though she’s not yet able to sit up, the Bumbo products help to provide the support she needs. Please note: My daughter’s goal is not to get her out of diapers and completely potty trained. Her goal is to have Keira get used to sitting and voiding #2 on the potty as much as possible, to ease into the eventual potty training that will come later. With her diligence, my daughter has not had to change a #2 diaper now in over a week! Keira is very little, she is maybe 13 lbs now. She was born on Halloween 2009.

My 3 1/2 year old has no interest in potty training…?

I know if I search this question I will get 1 million answers, but I thought it quicker if I just ask it myself.

My 3 1/2 year old has no interest whatsoever in potty training and I’m getting worried. I know she is ready to some degree because her diaper is dry some mornings, and she tells me when her diaper is wet and doesn’t like that. I’m looking for new suggestions, or reassurance that this is normal. Here are the things I have tried:

- putting her in underwear and letting her pee in it. Yes, she doesn’t like it, but she will pee in it over and over.
- sticker / award charts
- forgoing the "baby" potty chair, and use the big toilet (with a potty seat on it).
- watching me and her sister do it
- praising her endlessly for sitting on the potty and trying
- making her clean herself up (after wet diapers)
- using a doll (changing her diaper, doll sits on potty)

I’m sure there are others that I can’t think of right now. I do try to be consistent on putting her on the potty – but I’ve kind of stopped because she resists a lot and I have to listen to her cry most of the time while she sits on the potty. I don’t think it is right to force her to do it. So most times, I will suggest it matter-of-factly and if she’s into it then she sits on the potty. But it’s not a daily occurance.

Any new suggestions, or should I be waiting 6 more months or so? I’m exhausted, irritated and stressed out.
